Being Less Mainstream Should be More Popular

HIPSTER HATERS LEAVE NOW. This blog post will get you up in arms and personally, I don't feel like playing host to a flame war. So anyways, I believe that the music industry is suffocating itself. These over produced, pop stars are what people crave now and the true musical talent is dying. I'm going to show you why you should be more hipster and listen to good music.

To start things off, I'm going to be using the noun hipster for this whole article, so we should all get the same definition. I define hipsters as "those who don't assimilate to a particular culture. Thus creating their own culture and becoming a paradox." Simple enough, right? Okay cool, glad we got that cleared up, onto my next point.

We all love Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, don't lie, but they are not that original. Female solo singers have been around for ages and they keep revolutionizing how these girls sing, but nothing is evolving from them. They stand on the stage and give a great show, but they've doing that since the 60s and 70s! We need music to evolve again. We need another huge shake up like the creation of rock and roll from blues music. These were the hipsters of the day. These guys wanted something more catchy and upbeat than the sad, blues songs of the days past. So they created what they wanted which doesn't happen anymore.

Now, I can hear you complaining, "But Ryan! What about all the awesome, underground music that I listen to?" First off, shut up. The only reason you listen to that is because its underground. If it was mainstream, you wouldn't like it. These underground bands only want to be underground, nothing more. They like being unheard of and having a dedicated fan base. I can't say I blame them. No one likes seeing a band sell out, but they need to. All the innovation and culture these bands are making is genius and needs to bleed into the mainstream. I'm not saying all of the alternative bands need to become the only thing people listen to. I'm saying that pop stars and their producers need to take cues from what the underground is doing. With just that little bit of creative boost hip hop will become that much better and more people would want to listen to it which will bring more money into the music industry.

So I am issuing a call to arms. Become more like hipsters. Listen to music no one has heard of. Then once you have acquired a musical portfolio consisting of awesome, unheard stuff, SHARE IT! Don't be "that guy" and say you have awesome music but never shares it. You have the power in your hands to influence everyone around you to like music that is worth listening to and has actually heart in it instead of a gray computer that's producing it. You have your orders. GO OUT AND GET STUFF DONE!
