Muse. Effin Muse. Some call them lyrical gods. Some call them genius. I call them awesome. They are for sure my favorite band of all time. And you will learn to appreciate them more by the end of this article.
this is going to be a weekly column on artists that I
hold true in my heart and that you, the reader, should be listening to,
like yesterday.
Let's start with their driving force. Matthew Bellamy is either crazy or a genius. Most likely, he's both. The man's lyrics are seeping with double entendres and somewhat subtle political views. No matter what song you're listening to on any album, they always have meaning. In layman's terms, no songs are just thrown together. Every song conveys a message that will strike at your heart or make you want to rise up and revolt.
You can have the best lyrics in the world, but if you don't put a stellar beat under them, they mean nothing. Good thing that every aspect of three piece band is orchestrated down to the last sixteenth note. The bass lines are an intricate foundation for the guitar to glide upon while the drums provide solid timing and a dynamic influence over the band with variations of symbol crashes and build ups. The way these three musicians play off of each other is an amazing spectacle to witness through headphones and even a more awe striking spectacle as they break into impromptu jam sessions in the middle of concerts.
Oh man, Nothing is like a Muse concert. Seriously, when they're in town, go. Even if you're not convinced about their genius yet, just go to one of their concerts. They are seriously limited by 1s and 0s in songs. They perform as one unit as they pay homage to the rock show of yesteryear. Bringing lasers, lights and smoke machines together to create a mural of ecstasy for the audience to consume as they please.
So basically, Muse is amazing. If you are interested in listening to these guys, I'd recommend the album titled "Black Holes and Revelations" or "Absolution." These have the most songs people are familiar with and are considered to be Muse's prime. Then move onto either their new album "Resistance" because that's the direction they're heading and you'd better get used to that. Then try their old albums "Origins of Symmetry" and "Showbiz." Those albums are gritty and have the raw sound that Muse has refined over the years. Hopefully this post has opened your eyes to a great band or made you remember why they are one of the best bands in history.
